I just finished Victoria Christopher Murray and ReShonda Tate Billingsley‘s 3 module “Writer’s Pro Workshops” online. I decided to purchase this course to rejuvenate and educate myself as I seriously embark on my journey towards developing my Amazon Author Page.
For me, writing is like running. The more you run, the better you get at it. With steady practice, you get faster and you start to perfect your form. Then you skip a day, two, or seven, and it is like starting from scratch. Writing can be just as painful as first workout soreness. I figured I would ease my way into writing this time. Write a few Amazon shorts, build up my weekly audience and then a full length novel.
When I started the video, I was feeling pretty vulnerable. I was in one those 8 or 9 days writing valleys. I was feeling insecure about my grammar, my creativity and myself. When I opened up an old project, the edits intimidated me and so I shut myself down.
Victoria and ReShonda are too cool. If you are friends with them on Facebook, or have ever gone to one of their book signings or events, then you know they bring a serious dose of happiness and positivity to everything they do. This workshop was no different. Victoria Christopher Murray’s smile reignited my smile, and before the end of module 1 I felt so much better.
This post is not sponsored by Victoria or ReShonda; the ideas expressed in this review are mine and mine alone. I caught the workshop on sale for 50.00 (the regular price is $60.00). You can purchase each individual module separately for 25.00 apiece.
Module 1: Getting Started
The first module covers commitment and goal setting. During the video, Victoria and ReShonda encouraged me to look within myself. I had to have a conversation with myself to find out if my desire is greater than my resistance. I walked away feeling like a writer and with a plan.
Module 2: The Meat of the Novel
The second module covers plot, character development, character motivation and point of view. I plan on using this module to help me on my short story journey as well as my novel journey. To be honest, this unit and the handouts alone are worth the money. Plus, if you have dreamed of getting published by Brown Girl Publishing you definitely get a clear picture of what kind of novels Victoria and ReShonda like. Of all the modules, this one feels like the nuts and bolts.
Module 3: Going to the Next level
The final module felt more like a tips and tricks video. It covers show vs. tell, pacing, and setting development. The tips given here are great for editing your work. This is a video I can see myself using as a companion on my last read through.
One thing to note is you will need to print a little more than 50 pages. There is a cover page, a title page, a bio page and copyright page for each module. Printing the module works well for making notes that will help you write or edit better.
In conclusion, I am so glad that Victoria & ReShonda created this workshop. It couldn’t have come at a better time for me personally. From the way the site is set up, it looks like they will continue building this video series, which would be a good thing. I can’t wait to learn about sales. I will continue utilizing their products and services. They are so open, so giving, and so inspiring. I emailed ReShonda with a question about something she said in the video and she responded within minutes. They are accessible and approachable. I am glad I took the course.
